How an international hockey media company powers magazine stories with THA data
- Client: An international hockey media and data company
- Delivered: Custom analytics platform on THA's data layer
- Timeline: ~10 days from kickoff to delivery
- Result: 6 staff signed in during the first week
The challenge
The client publishes a magazine with long-form, data-driven hockey features. Each story needed numbers that held up across leagues: player production, usage, and comparisons between the NHL and European leagues.
Collecting that data took longer than writing the story. Sources sat in separate places, player IDs did not line up between leagues, and every new article meant starting the data work from scratch.
They wanted one place where writers and editors could pull consistent, comparable numbers — without building a data team.
The solution
THA built a private analytics platform on top of its existing data layer:
- Unified data: NHL play-by-play and xG alongside European league data, matched to one player ID across leagues.
- Built for the writer: views and comparison tables shaped around the questions stories actually ask — not a generic dashboard.
- Private by default: hosted behind access control for staff only.
- Fixed scope, fixed price: agreed up front and delivered as scoped.
Timeline
| Step | When |
|---|---|
| Kickoff with editorial and analytics | Day 1 |
| Scope agreed: questions, leagues, views | First days |
| Build on THA data layer | ~1 week |
| Delivery and walkthrough | ~Day 10 |
Total: about 10 days from kickoff to a working platform, in autumn 2026.
Results
- 6 staff signed in within the first week , across editorial and analytics.
- Data for magazine features now comes from one source instead of several.
- No new hires or infrastructure on the client side.
The data work that used to come before every story is now a lookup.
