Zone exits don’t show up on the scoresheet, but they determine who controls the game. In playoff hockey, where elite forechecks suffocate teams into mistakes, the ability to move the puck cleanly out of your own end isn’t optional — it’s survival.
Here’s how the eight remaining Conference Semifinal teams are breaking out as Round 2 gets underway.
Regular-season zone exit rates are a decent proxy for systems quality. In the playoffs, they become a referendum on execution under duress. Forecheck pressure spikes. Defencemen get fewer free looks up the wall. The D-to-D option that worked in March gets taken away by a hard-charging F1.
The number that separates good breakout teams from great ones in playoff situations isn’t raw exit success — it’s controlled exit rate under pressure: how often a team exits with puck possession when they’re being actively forechecked, not just when they have open ice.
The Panthers’ breakout is built on structure, not speed. Florida leads all Round 2 Eastern teams with a 68% controlled exit rate (playoff data through Series, Gm 1-3 sample). Their defencemen do a good job of reading the forecheck shape and using the stretch pass to the weak-side winger when Carolina’s F1 cheats high. The wall exit remains their highest-volume play — and it’s working at a 79% success rate when initiated from the left side.
Carolina is the most interesting team to watch in zone exits, because the Hurricanes actively accept failed exits in exchange for forecheck reloads. Their F3 swings back hard and their D are comfortable exiting on the rim even if it costs possession — they’re hunting the puck back in the neutral zone rather than trying to outskate the Panthers. The result: Carolina’s exit success rate sits lower at 63%, but their forecheck possession recapture rate off those failed exits is the highest in the East at 52%. Rodrigues and Necas are particularly dangerous as reset triggers once a Panthers exit breaks down in the neutral zone.
Watch for: Whether Florida’s D can maintain puck protection under Carolina’s overload left-wing forecheck. The Panthers get into trouble when they try to exit through the middle under pressure — a habit that produced two turnovers-for-goals in Round 1.
Toronto is fast, but fast doesn’t always mean controlled. The Leafs have the highest raw exit percentage in Round 2 East at 74%, but a chunk of that is dump-outs triggered by Boston’s aggressive F1 reads. Their controlled exit rate (51%) is below the Panthers — and that gap becomes meaningful when Toronto needs possession to generate offence.
The Leafs’ best exit play is Morgan Rielly reading Mitch Marner on the weak-side flare. When Marner has a step on the Bruins’ D2 in transition, the breakout converts to offence at a high rate. When he doesn’t — when Boston compresses the neutral zone and takes away the early outlet — Toronto too often reverts to chips that reset possession in the offensive zone for Boston’s defence.
The Bruins, meanwhile, have become one of the most efficient zone exit teams in the conference at 71% success, 59% controlled. Charlie McAvoy’s ability to read pressure and thread the mid-zone seam pass is the biggest single factor. He’s running their breakout like a point guard — scanning, resetting, and finding the early outlet before the Leafs’ F2 can close. Brad Marchand as a net-front pivot off a failed exit is an underrated secondary weapon.
Watch for: Boston’s forecheck is designed to overload Toronto’s right side and force exits through the strong-side wall. The Leafs need their LDs to be comfortable with the D-to-D early; if they’re not, Boston recycles puck possession and grinds the Leafs into a defensive posture.
This is the most analytically interesting zone exit battle in the playoffs right now. Edmonton is elite at controlled exits when their top pair is on the ice — their 64% controlled exit rate with Bouchard on rises to 72% with him specifically. Take him off the ice and Edmonton’s exit rate drops to 55%, which is mediocre by Conference Semifinal standards.
Why? Because Edmonton’s breakout relies heavily on the D being able to beat F1 off the wall and hit the stretch. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are the two best stretch targets in hockey — they can turn any half-decent outlet into a 2-on-1 if there’s space. Dallas knows this, and their forecheck is specifically built to eliminate it: Jordan and Duchene lock down the D-to-wall option while the F3 eliminates the stretch early. The Stars want Edmonton’s D to chip up the wall, then rim, because Jamie Benn and Miro Heiskanen are exceptional at converting retrieved rims into clean breakouts the other way.
Dallas exits with purpose rather than flair. Their 66% success rate and 57% controlled exits are solid without being flashy — but their failed exit-to-turnover rate of just 11% is the best in the West. They almost never give up a chance off a blown breakout. Structure over creativity.
Watch for: Edmonton in Games 4 and 5 if Dallas takes a 2-1 series lead. The Oilers have historically pressed when chasing, which forces lower-percentage exit decisions. That’s when Dallas’s forecheck architecture becomes truly punishing.
Colorado’s zone exits have been a quiet storyline all playoffs. They’re running at 70% success, 62% controlled — numbers that look great until you account for the fact that their most dangerous exits come from Cale Makar in open space, which is increasingly rare in May.
The Jets have done an excellent job taking away Makar’s time in Round 2. Connor is deployed as an early F1 to disrupt before Colorado can set the breakout — forcing the Avs’ wingers to carry the puck up the wall under pressure, which is not where Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin are at their most dangerous. When Colorado’s forwards are doing the exiting instead of Makar or Toews, their controlled exit rate drops to 53%.
Winnipeg’s own breakout has been solid — 67% success, 54% controlled — and they rely heavily on Josh Morrissey’s puck mobility. Morrissey is one of the best skating defencemen in the West at using his edges to create separation from an F1 and buy time for the outlet. When he’s under full pressure, the Jets get physical and use the strong corner to protect and reset. Not pretty, but effective.
Watch for: Colorado’s transition speed is still the best in the West when exits succeed. If Makar is finding space for even 30% of their exits, the Avs can still generate Grade-A offence regardless of what Winnipeg does structurally. The question is whether the Jets can maintain that level of F1 pressure across a full 7-game series.
Zone exit quality in Round 2 breaks down into two tiers:
Tier 1 — Controlled and consistent: Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers (with Bouchard), Boston Bruins
Tier 2 — Functional but fragile: Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, Winnipeg Jets
What separates these groups isn’t raw success rate — it’s what happens when exits fail. Tier 1 teams have structure behind the exit attempt; their neutral zone isn’t exposed when a chip misses. Tier 2 teams rely more on individual skill to recover from breakout pressure, which works until it doesn’t.
The teams that advance to the Conference Finals will be the ones that solve the forecheck they’re facing — not by trying to out-skill it, but by running a breakout that gives it no clean entry point.
That’s where these series will be decided.
