Conference Finals coaching is, in large part, line matching under time pressure. Each coach has roughly 30 seconds after a whistle to make a line change decision. Over a 7-game series, those decisions accumulate into a deployment pattern that defines which of their forwards face which of the opponent’s — and determines where the series-level advantages emerge.

The visiting team puts players on the ice first after a whistle. The home team responds last — and chooses their matchup with full information. This structural advantage is real and measurable.
Home teams in Conference Finals from 2015–2025 held their opponents’ first lines to 45.8% xGF% on average. Visiting teams held the opposing top line to 48.3% xGF% on average. The 2.5-point gap is almost entirely explained by last-change matchup control: when you choose second, you can always get your shutdown pair out against their first line.
This means home-ice advantage in Conference Finals is partially a line-matching advantage, not just a crowd or travel factor. Teams that win Games 1, 2, 5, 7 at home have a tactical deployment edge in those games regardless of roster quality.
The first goal of Conference Finals line matching is suppressing the opponent’s most dangerous forward line. In most matchups, that means deploying a defensive-forward line (not just a defensive pair) to shadow the opposing top line.
Track the xGF% for the opponent’s top line game by game. A visiting top line at 42% xGF% is being shut down by matchup — they are facing the home team’s best defensive forwards in favorable conditions. A visiting top line at 56% xGF% is winning their deployment battle — the home team has been forced into unfavorable matchups or has failed to manage last change effectively.
The signal: when the visiting team’s top line posts xGF% above 52% in a Conference Finals game, it typically means one of three things:

When a coach deploys his top line from predominantly offensive-zone face-offs, he is managing their deployment against soft competition. When they start predominantly in the neutral or defensive zone, the coach is using them as his best weapon regardless of the defensive burden.
The split to watch in Conference Finals:
In Conference Finals, top-line OZS% below 45% is unusual and almost always indicates a lineup constructed around defensive competence, not offensive creation. The 2015 Blackhawks used their Toews line this way in the Conference Finals. The 2019 Bruins used their Bergeron line similarly.
Every Conference Finals team has at least one forward line that takes the opponent’s top matchup. Track the xGA% (expected goals against percentage) for the team’s self-identified shutdown line — the one that starts most frequently in the defensive zone against opposing elite lines.
An effective shutdown line holds their opponent’s top line to below 44% xGF%. An ineffective one allows above 51% even when receiving defensive-zone start advantages. The difference is in skating speed and puck-battle outcomes: shutdown lines that win board battles and exit the defensive zone with possession remove the possession-danger cycle that defines elite offensive lines.
The HDCA per 60 (high-danger chances against per 60 minutes) for the shutdown line’s ice time is the clearest number here. Below 7.5 HDCA/60: elite suppression. Above 10.0: the opponent is winning the line matchup battle.
Visiting teams cannot control last change, but they can disrupt the matching system through line change timing:
Early line change: Change lines with 45+ seconds left in a shift before any stoppage. If the home team doesn’t anticipate the change, they may be caught with an unfavorable matchup at the following faceoff — their checking line against the visitor’s top power forward line.
Tired-line pressure: If the visiting team’s third line extends a shift to 55+ seconds and draws a penalty or forces a defensive zone faceoff, the home team may not have time to match their preferred shutdown line before the faceoff.
Third-period momentum shifts: When the home team is protecting a lead in the third period, they lean heavily on their shutdown matchup. The visiting team can force their top line onto the ice in transition situations — not from faceoffs but from neutral-zone recoveries — bypassing the matching advantage entirely.
The data signal for these tactics: when the visiting team’s top line faces the home team’s top defensive pair at a rate lower than expected (below 60% of shifts, when they average 70%+ during home games), the visiting team is successfully disrupting the matching system.
Four numbers define the line matching battle across a Conference Finals series:
Top-line xGF% by game: Is the opponent’s best line improving or declining as the series goes on? Increasing xGF% means they are adapting to the matchup. Decreasing means the shutdown deployment is solving them.
Home vs. away xGF% split for top line: Does the best line perform worse on the road (last-change disadvantage) or maintain performance? Elite forward lines compensate for road deployment disadvantages.
Shutdown line HDCA/60: Is the team’s checking line performing elite suppression (below 7.5) or leaking chances (above 10.0)?
OZS% trend: Is the coach forced to increase offensive-zone starts for his top line as the series progresses? That is a sign the defensive matchup is being lost and the coach is protecting his line from unfavorable defensive draws.
